What does RHTP mean for critical access hospitals?

Critical access hospitals are core RHTP beneficiaries. The program can help CAHs stabilize at-risk service lines, adopt telehealth and remote monitoring, strengthen workforce, and join regional networks, all aimed at keeping essential services available in communities that would otherwise lose them.

Why CAHs are central

CAHs are often the only hospital for a wide area. Their financial fragility is exactly the problem RHTP was designed to address.

How CAHs can use the funding

High-value uses for CAHs include:

  • Stabilizing OB, ED, and behavioral health service lines
  • Telehealth and remote monitoring to extend reach
  • Workforce recruitment and retention
  • Regional partnerships and shared services

Frequently asked questions

Do CAHs apply directly to CMS?
No. CAHs participate through their state's RHTP solicitations.
